Cowgirls of the West Museum: Girls Ride Too

We think of the Wild West as a very macho place – there’s a reason they call it a dude ranch, after all – but did you know that the ladies got up to their share of riding and roping? At Cheyenne’s Cowgirls of the West Museum, you’ll find an incredible treasure trove of incredible memorabilia, including tons of great photographs of these ladies strutting their stuff. Rodeo was a major entertainment back in the day, and while women didn’t work on the range, they certainly knew how to draw a crowd with trick riding. Some of the biggest names of the era are memorialized here, and the sheer amount of cool stuff they have to look at is overwhelming. You’ll wish that motion pictures had existed back then so you could watch these cowgirls in action, but being able to see their costumes and spurs is almost as good.

2 Doors Down: Open Up

If you’re looking for a burger in Cheyenne, you have plenty of options. That’s why it’s notable that regulars all seem to favor just one place – 2 Doors Down. It all starts here with the meat: every burger here is made from fresh, hand-cut beef – never frozen. Or you can opt for a salmon patty, a chicken breast grilled or breaded, or a veggie burger. From there, pile on the toppings. The house special “Magnificent” burger boasts red onion, tomato, ranch dressing, and a toothsome combination of Swiss and American cheese. It’s a serious burger. Sides are what you’d expect – the fries are crisp and tasty, and there are a variety of salads on the menu if you’re looking for something a little healthier. Some complain that the prices are a bit high – around nine dollars for a burger and all the fries you can eat – but these are great quality burgers!

Old West Museum: Ride ‘Em Cowboy

The Wyoming area was a major hotspot in the American West, and this is one of the best places to learn about it. There is so much to learn here that one visit might not be enough. Some of the most interesting materials here include one of the country’s largest collections of horse-drawn carriages and wagons, as well as a massive exhibit devoted to Frontier Days, the yearly celebration of Cheyenne’s heritage. In addition, the museum also features the evolution of the rodeo – what they call the “world’s first extreme sport” – with a focus on bullriding. Western art is also well-represented here, with a room devoted to Native American art from the region. There are a number of hands-on exhibits for young learners as well. The Museum also hosts a number of outreach programs for kids, as well as continuing education programs. This is a great place to get in touch with the classic American pioneer spirit.

Rich, creamy grits are paired with huge gulf shrimp sautéed with pecan smoked bacon, fresh vegetables, and mushrooms. Other dishes that draw raves include the Kona coffee-rubbed ribeye steak, which is cooked to perfection and served with tri-colored potatoes, as well as the smoked Cornish game hen, which is brined to seal in moisture before being grilled and glazed. This is one of the best places to eat in Cheyenne, without argument. It’s a small restaurant that is only open three nights a week, so make reservations early if you plan to visit.

This oddball restaurant is an outpost of a worldwide chain that has over a thousand branded locations, but none of them is quite like this!
